Abington, Pa. - Chris Potash and his squad were seconds away from forcing overtime against Lancaster Bible Saturday afternoon, until CJ Dunston's layup as time expired gave the Chargers a 66-64 victory over Abington.
Eleven minutes into the game, Abington would jump out to an early eight point lead. Lancaster Bible would cut the Nittany Lion lead to just three points at 1:10 mark of the first half.
Abington was just 13-for-30 (43.3%) from the field in the first half, while Lancaster Bible shot the ball at a 48.3% rate (14-for-29) during the first 20 minutes of play.
After the break, both Lancaster Bible and Abington would exchange baskets throughout the second half. Abington would maintain its slim lead during the first nine minutes of the second half. A layup from Lancaster Bible's Herbie Brown at the 11:01 mark of the second half would tie the game at 49-49.
Naheer Mirza's three-pointer at the 6:31 mark of the second half would give Lancaster Bible their first lead of the game at 57-56. Abington would go up 61-59 thanks to
Dequan Jackson's (Philadelphia, Pa.) at the 4:27 mark. That would be the last lead Abington would have for the game.
With Lancaster Bible up 64-63 with 34 seconds remaining, the Chargers Dondre Perry was called for a foul that sent
Dequan Jackson to the line to shoot two. Jackson would hit one-of-two free throws to tie the game at 64-64. With the shot clock unplugged, the Chargers had the ability to hold the ball for one final shot. CJ Dunston's layup in the paint as time expired would seal the victory for Lancaster Bible.
Abington (3-8, 2-2 NEAC) shot 23-for-58 (39.7%) from the field, while Lancaster Bible shot 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the field for the game. The Blue and White were just 6-for-15 (40%) from three point land, while the Chargers were 4–for-15 (26.7%) from beyond the arc.
Abington was led by
Max Alton's (Pennington, N.J.) 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting.
Dequan Jackson chipped in 14 points, and
Devin Jones recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Michael Davis also added 12 points of his own.
Lancaster Bible's CJ Dunston led all scorers with 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting. Dunston also added 11 rebounds. Lancaster Bible outrebounded Abington 37-30 for the game.
Abington will return to action this Tuesday, January 13th, as they travel to Williamsport, Pa. to take on Penn College. Game is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off.
