Women’s Basketball Edges Lancaster Bible, 64-62

Abington, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's basketball has now won five straight games as they narrowly defeated Lancaster Bible College, 64-62, Saturday afternoon. 

Abington (7-1, 4-0 NEAC) shot 40.3% (25-for-62) from the field for the day. They picked up 32 rebounds and shot 50% from beyond the arc.

It was a tightly contested first half, and Abington would have a 10 point lead at one point. Lancaster Bible would battle back to cut the Nittany Lion lead to seven points at the half. Jessica Schmidt (Elkins Park, Pa.) shot 6-of-10 from the field in the first half. In total, Schmidt registered 12 points in the first half. Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) was second among all Abington players in the first half with 11 points.
 
After the break, both Lancaster Bible and Abington would exchange baskets throughout the second half. Abington would maintain its slim lead during the first 10 minutes of the second half. A three-pointer from Lancaster Bible's Kirsten Webster gave the Chargers their first lead since midway through the first half. They took a 58-55 lead with 4:29 remaining. 

Janaiah Elum would hit a three-pointer with 1:36 to play to give Abington a 60-58 lead. Lancaster Bibles' Katy Stover would tie the game with two free throws less than 10 seconds later. Elum would give Abington the lead with 1:14 remaining, but the Chargers'Aubrey Folger hit a layup of her own with 49 seconds to play tie the game at 62-62.  

Jessica Schmidt was fouled with 25 seconds remaining and converted one of two free throws to give Abington a slim 63-62 lead. After a missed Lancaster Bible shot, the Chargers were forced to foul. Stephanie Keyes would convert one of two free throws with two seconds remaining to give Abington a 64-62 lead.

Katy Stover's last second three point attempt went in-and-out as the buzzer sounded, and Abington held on for the victory. Stover led all scorers in the contest with 21 points. Aubrey Folger tallied 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Chargers.

Janaiah Elum would finish the game with 16 points on 6-of-16 shooting. Keyes would also add 16 points of her own on just 4-of-14 shooting. She was 5-of-7 from the free throw line. Jessica Schmidt (Elkins Park, Pa.) added 16 points and nine rebounds. The Nittany Lions were 7-of-11 from the free throw line for the game.

The win snaps a six-game losing streak against Lancaster Bible, which dated back to December of 2009.

Abington will return to action this Tuesday, January 13th, as they travel to Williamsport, Pa. to take on Penn College. Tip-Off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
