Women’s Basketball Edges Wells, 55-50

Abington, Pa.- It wasn't a pretty game shooting wise, as both teams struggled shooting the ball, but the Lady Lions managed to pull out the 55-50 victory over Wells College Sunday afternoon.
 
Abington would jump out to a 22-13 lead 13 minutes into the first half. Points were at a premium during the first 20 minutes as Abington would enter the locker room with a slim 27-22 lead.
 
Stephanie Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) shot 4-of-7 from the field in the first half. In total, Keyes registered 13 points in the first half to lead all scorers. Kyra Lunsford (Vineland, N.J) was second among all Abington players in the first half with eight points.
 
After the break, neither team would score a basket until Wells' Kaitlynne Knapp scored a layup at the 16:18 mark of the second half to cut Abington's lead to just three points. A three-pointer from Lunsford at the 8:02 mark would give Abington a 41-31 lead.
 
A three-pointer from Wells' Cassie Smythe at the 5:18 mark would cut Abington's lead to just five points 46-41. Kyra Lunsford was then called for a foul at the 4:18 mark, and Smythe would knock down two foul shots for the Express to cut Abington's lead to 46-43.
 
Smythe would then hit a three-pointer with eight seconds remaining to narrow the Lady Lion lead to just four points at 54-50. Kaitlynne Knapp would foul Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) with six seconds remaining, and Kimball would knock down one of two foul shots to seal the victory for Abington.
 
Abington (10-1, 7-0 NEAC)  is one of the best three-point shooting teams in the nation, and they made 8-of-16 shots from beyond the arc despite Wells outshooting the Nittany Lions by a narrow margin.Abington finished the game 17-of-44 (38.6%) from the field while Wells was 19-of-49 (38.8%) on the day.
 
Stephanie Keyes scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting while Kyra Lunsford tallied 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting. Janaiah Elum had six assists to lead all players.
 
Wells was led by Cassie Smythe's 15 points on 4-of-4 shooting. Smythe was also a perfect 4-of-4 from beyond the arc.
 
Abington will return to action this Wednesday, January 21st, as they host the College of St. Elizabeth. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
