LANGHORNE, Pa. - Sophomore
Spencer Bartron (Camden, Del.) put up a career high of 20 points, but it wasn't enough for the Penn State Abington men's basketball team to defeat Cairn University, as the Nittany Lions fell to the Highlanders 99-70 Wednesday night. Â Abington falls to 0-2 for the season.
The Nittany Lions got off to a fast start with back-to-back three-pointers from Bartron and senior
Devin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) to take a 6-0 lead early in the first half. The Highlanders would come back to take the lead after eight minutes of action after they shot two from the free-throw line, which gave Cairn a 15-14 advantage. For the next four minutes the lead would change hands four times in the back and forth run of play. Bartron's hot hand from behind the arc would net the Nittany Lions two consecutive three-pointers, but in the final eight minutes the Highlanders went on a 26-16 run to go into the half up 49-38.
In the second half Abington would cut its deficit to five points when Bartron drained another three from behind the arc, making it a 58-53 game, with 16 minutes in the contest. In the remaining minutes the Nittany Lions offense stalled as the Highlanders went on a 41-17 run.
Jones led the Nittany Lions with his second consecutive game in double-figures, with 21 on the night. Â Sophomore
Christian Crane (Churchville, Pa.) joined Bartron and Jones in double-figures with 11 points.
The Highlanders out-rebounded the Nittany Lions 52-34 in the contest.
Abington return to action when they travel to Annville, Pa. for the Rinso Marquette Tournament at Lebanon Valley College. The Nittany Lions will face the Dutchman on Friday at 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday Abington will face either Wilkes or Rowan in the championship or consolation match.
