Women's Basketball Cruises to Win over Notre Dame of Maryland

BALTIMORE, MD. - Senior guard Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted 17 points as she led the Penn State Abington women's basketball team to a 62-38 win over Notre Dame of Maryland, on Sunday evening. The Nittany Lions continue their run winning their third game of the season (3-0).

The Gators started the game with a 5-2 lead, but a shot by Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) from downtown tied it up with five minutes remaining in the period.  In the final three minutes, Elum heated up from behind the arc as she hit two three pointers to cap a 10-0 run to end the first period up 17-7.

Abington started the period with a layup from Roidriguez, but Notre Dame would storm back, taking a 23-22 lead with two minutes remaining in the half.  Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) returned the lead to the Nittany Lions with two layups to give Abington a 26-23 lead going into the break.

The Nittany Lions got out to a fast start in the third period on a 19-3 run, behind clutch shooting on the floor as they hit 8-of-15 (53%) with five different players contributing. Abington held a 46-31 lead at the end of the third period.

Strong defense from Abington helped the Nittany Lions close out the game by holding the Gators to seven points in the quarter.  Five points each from Rodriguez and Jones helped to finish off the Gators.

Elum, Jones and Rodriguez all posted double figures and junior center Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) scooped up 10 rebounds.

Abington will enter NEAC conference play when they travel to rival Penn State Berks on Saturday December 5th at 3:00 p.m.
