READING, Pa. – Senior guard
Janaiah Elum led the Penn State Abington women's basketball team with 24 points as they defeated rival Penn State Berks 70-53, Saturday afternoon. Abington remains unbeaten at 4-0 and 1-0 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
Berks opened on a 10-3 run in the first five minutes on consecutive three-point shots.
A shot behind the arc from Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) changed momentum as Abington returned on 8-1 run to tie the game at 11-11. Two free throws from Elum gave Abington the lead, and a steal finished with a layup from
Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.) increased the lead to 15-11.
Berks answered with a lay-up and three free-throws, taking a 16-15 lead.
Elum made a layup and jump shot to give Abington a 19-16 lead after the first period.
Freshman
Shayna Rodriguez(Philadelphia, Pa.) scored four points in the paint on a 7-4 run for Abington. Elum took control of the game, when she drained three shots from behind the arc to give Abington a double digit lead over Berks.
Berks fought its way back to a single digit deficit but Abington held the lead 44-36 after Elum's incredible 21 point first half.
Defense dominated the third quarter, Abington held Berks scoreless until the final two minutes outscoring its rival 12-3.
In the fourth period junior center
Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) helped Abington finish off berks with seven points in the period. Berks kept pace with Abington (14-14), but wasn't enough to overcome Abington.
Abington will return home to host Summit University on Thursday with tip-off slated for 6:00 p.m.
