Women’s Basketball Drops Heartbreaker on Senior Night

Abington, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped a tightly contested affair, 71-70, Friday night against Penn College.

On their final regular season home games of their careers, Stephanie Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and Jessica Schmidt (Elkins Park, Pa.) recorded 27 points and 10 points respectively.

Schmidt became just the third women's basketball player in Abington history to record 1,000 points her career. She would accomplish the mark at the 5:03 mark of the second half after a good layup.

As for the game, Abington would jump out to an early 26-8 lead just ten minutes in. The Wildcats would crawl back into the game throughout the final five minutes of the first half.

Abington's lead was cut to just seven points at halftime, as the Nittany Lions took a 37-30 lead into intermission.

Keyes was 5-of-12 from the field in the first half. In total, she registered 14 points and was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.), Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, Pa.), and Jessica Schmidt all had six points in the opening 20 minutes.

After the break, both the Wildcats and Nittany Lions continued to scrap along, trading baskets with each other for the duration of the second half.

Stephanie Keyes' jumper with 1:06 remaining would give Abington a 70-69 lead. Penn College's Jamie Steer missed a jumper with 42 seconds remaining, but Abington then turned the ball over back to Penn College.

Following a Wildcat timeout, Kyra Lunsford (Vineland, N.J.) fouled the Wildcats Jamie Steer with six seconds remaining sending her to the free throw line for two shots. Steer would hit both shots to give Penn College the 71-70 lead.

After getting the ball to half court, Abington took their final timeout with four seconds remaining to set up for one final play. Janaiah Elum got the ball on the inbound, but her jumper was no good.

Abington (18-5, 15-4 NEAC) shot 40.6% (26-for-64) from the field for the game. In total, the Blue and White picked up 42 rebounds and shot 36.0 % from beyond the arc.

Abington returns to action tomorrow, February 21st, as they square off against the College of St. Elizabeth in what will be the team's final regular season game. Game time is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start in Morristown, N.J.
