Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Tom Zulewski

Women’s Basketball Suffers Setback against SUNY Poly

Abington, Pa.-  Despite 11 points from Stephanie Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.), the Penn State Abington women's basketball team fell to SUNY Poly 72-59 Saturday afternoon.

SUNY Poly would jump out to an early 9-4 lead just five minutes into the game thanks to a pair of good free throws from the Wildcats' Barrie Brooks. Elizabeth Jones' (Philadelphia, Pa.) three- pointer would tie the game at 11-11 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half.

With Abington struggling shooting the ball in the first half, SUNY Poly took advantage of the Abington missed shots. The Wildcats extended their lead to 26-13 after a pair of good free throws from Geena Gallo at the 2:15 mark of the first half.

Abington would enter the locker rooms trailing 26-16.

The Lady Lions were just 7-of-25 (28.0%) from the field in the first half while going 2-for-9 from beyond the arc.

SUNY Poly would control the play of the game during the first 10 minutes of the second half. A jumper from Lauren Knowles at the 11:28 mark of the second half would extend the Wildcats lead to 17 points.

Abington would climb right back into the game, cutting the SUNY Poly lead to just four points after going on 13-0 run that took over seven minutes off the clock. Unfortunately, that would be the closest the Lady Lions got to the Wildcats. A pair of good free throws from SUNY Poly's Emily Alicea would extend their lead to 10 points with just 58 second remaining in the game.

Janaiah Elum's (Philadelphia, Pa.) 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting and Stephanie Keyes' 11 points on 4-of-13 shooting paced Abington for the contest.

In total, Abington (13-4, 10-3 NEAC) was just 17-of-58 (29.3%) from the field, and 5-of-22 (22.7%) from three-point land. They were also an uncharacteristically 4-of-11 (36.4%) from the foul line.

Abington returns to action tomorrow Sunday, February 8th, as they square against the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers. Game time is scheduled for a noon start.
