Abington, Pa.- The Penn State Abington men's basketball team suffered their seventh conference loss of the season Sunday afternoon, as they were defeated by SUNY Cobleskill 62-51.
Abington got behind the eight ball right from the opening tip as SUNY Cobleskill would jump out to an early 9-4 lead six minutes into the game. Cobleskill would then go on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to 18-6.
The Nittany Lions would cut the Cobleskill deficit to just three points after going on a 9-0 run courtesy of
Josh Bair's (Oakford, Pa.) three-pointer at 6:35 of the first half. Bair would then give Abington 21-20 lead after his jumper at the 4:26 mark was good.
Abington would take a slim 28-27 lead into the dressing rooms.
The Nittany Lions were 10-of-21 (47.6%) from the field in the first half. Cobleskill was 12-of-28 (42.9%) during the first 20 minutes of play. Abington turned the ball over 11 times in the first half.
After the break, Abington went on a 6-1 run to begin the second half extending their lead to 36-29. Mike Chapman's jumper would give Cobleskill the lead again at the 10:50 mark of the second half.
Dequan Jackson's layup at the 7:23 mark of the second half would give Abington a three point lead at 47-44.
Both teams would trade baskets throughout the final seven minutes of play, but two big dunks by Cobleskill's Cortrell King and Travis Woods would turn the momentum in favor of the Fighting Tigers. Abington had a chance late, but sloppy play and clutch free throws by Cobleskill propelled the Fighting Tigers over the Nittany Lions.
Max Alton (Pennington, N.J.) led Abington with 15 points on 5-of-15 shooting.
Dequan Jackson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Devin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 13 and 10 points respectively. Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) also recorded nine rebounds in the game.
Abington (7-13, 6-7 NEAC) finished the game 20-of-46 (43.5%) from the field. They struggled from beyond the arc hitting just 25.0% of their shots on 4-of-16 shooting. Abington committed 24 turnovers in the game.
Cobleskill was led by Alexis Nunez who had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Cortrell King had 16 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Abington will look to halt their losing streak as they return to the court this Wednesday, February 11
th, as they travel to Reading, Pa. to square off against Penn State Berks. Game time is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Abington beat Berks 84-74 back on December 6
th.
