Baseball Defeats Medaille for First Win of 2015

Auburndale, Fla.- The Penn State Abington baseball team picked up their first victory of the 2015 campaign Tuesday morning, defeating Medaille College 3-2.

Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third, Max German (Newtown, Pa.) would triple to right centerfield with two outs. He would later score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.

Diego Melendez (Camden, N.J.), who got the start and the win for Abington, was rock solid on the mound for the Nittany Lions. Melendez gave up eight hits over nine innings of work while striking out seven.

Abington would take the lead in bottom half of the sixth inning thanks to some clutch hitting and small ball.

Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) and Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Bryan Melendez (Lansdale, Pa.) would lay down a bunt single, advancing Meyers to third base and Ditro to second.

Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) would then hit a sacrifice fly  to right field, scoring Meyers to give Abington a 2-1 lead. With Mike Scaringelli (Bordentown, N.J.) at the plate, Melendez stole second and Ditro successfully stole home giving Abington a 3-1 lead.

Medaille would tack on one run in the top half of the ninth inning, but Diego Melendez struck out Averey Bet-Payumo to seal the victory for the Nittany Lions.

Abington (1-3, 0-0 NEAC) continues its spring break trip with Juniata College tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
