Baseball outslugs Juniata, 20-16

Box Score Winter Haven, Fla.- The Penn State Abington Nittany Lions and the Juniata College Eagles combined for 36 runs and 30 hits Wednesday afternoon, with Abington coming out on top 20-16.
 
Abington scored seven runs in the first inning, chasing Juniata starter Brady Cotler from the game before the Eagles had an opportunity to bat.
 
Pat Fitzgerald (Warrington, Pa.) had two RBI's in the inning. In total, Abington had seven runs and five hits in the opening inning.
 
Juniata would score a run in the bottom of the first to make it 7-1. Abington would respond with a Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, Pa.) solo homerun in the second inning, and two more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 10-1.
 
The Nittany Lions would tack on another six runs in the seventh inning to go ahead 16-3. Tom Ditro had the big hit in the inning with a double that scored three runs.
 
Juniata was able to answer back with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh to make it 16-10. Three of the Eagles runs were walked in while another run was scored on a wild pitch.
 
The hit and run parade continued for Abington in the top half of the eighth inning as Max German (Newtown, Pa.) singled home both Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) and Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) to extend the Nittany Lion lead to 18-10.
 
Juniata would make it interesting in the bottom portion of the eighth inning, as the Eagles would score five runs on just one hit to make it an 18-15 game.
 
Abington would add two more runs in the top half of the ninth inning, extending their lead to 20-15. Tom Ditro was 4-for-6 on the day with five RBI's, while Max German was 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI's.
 
This was the first time Abington scored 20 runs since April 7th of 2012, when they beat Keuka College 20-3.
 
Abington (2-3, 0-0 NEAC) wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow with a game against Thomas More (Ky.) First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
