WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – In the season opener for the Penn State Abington baseball team, the Nittany Lions were swept by Penn State Altoona, as they dropped game one 15-16 and game two 2-4.
Freshman infielder
Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) had a huge day for the Nittany Lions batting at DH. At the plate Meyers averaged .625 from eight at bats, thee runs off five hits, and belted two home runs during game one.
In game one, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, Abington held a 15-12 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but a three run triple for Altoona tied the game with no outs. After intentionally walking two batters to draw the double play, Altoona won on a walk off single, 16-15.
Game two was quiet until the fifth inning. Altoona knocked in four runs starting with a one out double that scored two runs, and a single later in the inning that drove in another two runs. Abington tried to answer back in the bottom of the inning, when they scored off a
Max German (Newtown, Pa.) single and a
Bryan Melendez (Lansdale, Pa.) triple in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Abington continues its spring trip with Beloit today at 1 p.m.
