Baseball Drops Contest to Beloit

Winter Haven, Fla. - After dropping two games to Penn State Altoona this past Sunday, the Penn State Abington baseball team returned to the diamond today down in sunny Florida to take on Beloit College.

Unfortunately, the Nittany Lions blew a five-run lead in the sixth inning as they fell to the Buccaneers 12-10.

Beloit would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Abington would respond in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2. Pat Fitzgerald (Warrington, Pa.) and Max German (Newtown, Pa.) each doubled in the inning for the Nittany Lions.

Abinton's offense would explode in the bottom half of the third inning for five runs on five hits. Bryan Melendez (Lansdale, Pa.), Brandon Mau (Philadelphia, Pa.), Fran Caruso (Philadelphia, Pa.), Mike Scaringelli (Bordentown, N.J.) and Max German all tallied RBI's in the inning for the Blue and White as Abington took a commanding 7-3 lead.

Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) would hit his third homerun of the season in the top half of the fourth inning to give Abington an 8-3 lead. Meyers hit two homeruns this past Sunday against Penn State Altoona. In total, Meyers was 3-for-4 on the day with an RBI, three runs scored, and a triple short of the cycle.

The Nittany Lions would run into some major trouble in the sixth inning, as they surrendered eight runs on four hits while committing one error, as the Buccaneers took an 11-8 lead.

Down 11-8 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Bryan Melendez  would try and rally the Nittany Lions back into game with his two-out, two run single down the left-field line, cutting the Buccaneer lead to 11-10.

Despite his efforts, Abington came up just short. Melendez was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI's and one run scored.

Abington (0-3, 0-0 NEAC) continues its spring break trip with Medaille College tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m.
