Softball Splits Against Franklin and Marshall

Lancaster, Pa.- The Penn State Abington softball team split a pair of non-conference games Sunday afternoon against Franklin and Marshall.

Abington dropped game one 6-1, but rebounded in game two with a 9-7 victory over the Diplomats.

In game one, Abington jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of third inning as Breanna Lineman singled to centerfield scoring Bianca Monterosso (Abington, Pa.).

F&M would bounce back in the bottom half of the third inning, taking the lead for good, as Melissa Bollmeyer hit a triple to right field, scoring one and a throwing error allowed Bollmeyer to score for the 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Enrica Fabricant was called on to pinch hit with the bases loaded and two outs. She delivered for F&M hitting a grand slam and putting the game out of reach at 6-1.

In game two, F&M would jump out to a 3-0 lead as Megan Ryan hit a single in the bottom of the first scoring Bollmeyer for the 1-0 lead. Patricia Crigler then followed with an RBI-double to make it 2-0 Diplomats.

Katie Zogorski would also hit an RBI-double scoring Crigler to make it 3-0 F&M. The Diplomats would tack on a fourth run in the bottom of the second inning for a 4-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, after a Greta Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) single, Sheila O'Hagan (Willow Grove, Pa.) doubled putting runners on second and third with Emily Mattes (Middletown, Pa.) coming to the plate.

Mattes would single scoring both Sheridan and O'Hagan to cut the Diplomats' lead to 4-2. Whitney DeLagol (Warminster, Pa.) would make it a 4-3 game after she singled to left field scoring Mattes.

F&M would respond right away in the bottom of the third inning.

Enrica Fabricant hit an RBI-groundout to give F&M a 5-3 advantage. Erin Russell then singled scoring F&M's Karly Newcomb increasing the Diplomats' lead to 6-3. Kelly Van O'Linda then reached on an error plating Russell to give F&M a 7-3 lead.

The Nittany Lions didn't quit as Michalea Drogalis (Croydon, Pa.) reached base on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth to score DeLagol cutting the Diplomats' lead to 7-4.

Danielle Jones (Levittown, Pa.) followed with a single, and Bianca Monterosso recorded an RBI-groundout to cut F&M's lead to 7-5.

Greta Sheridan singled up the middle scoring Jones to make it 7-6 game.

Abington would then take the 8-7 lead as O'Hagan reached base on an error that scored both Lineman and Sheridan. Mattes would then single scoring O'Hagan for the 9-7 lead.

Drogalis (6-2) got the win for Abington in relief of starter Emily Wrenn. Mattes was 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI's in game two.  

Abington (14-9-1, 10-4 NEAC) will return to action this Tuesday, April 21, as the Nittany Lions host the Lancaster Bible College Chargers. Game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with game two slated to start at 5:00 p.m.
