Baseball Takes Two from Gallaudet

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Abington baseball team (16-15, 10-2 NEAC) remains atop the NEAC standings after a sweep of Gallaudet University Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions battled through game one coming away with a 4-2 win, and took game two by a comfortable 10-2 margin.

Diego Melendez (Camden, N.J.) and Ted Smallwood (Athens, N.Y.) both picked up the wins with a combined 11 strikeouts and only gave two runs between the two.

Max German (Newtown, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions for the day going 3-of-5 with three runs, two RBIs and two walks.

Abington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the in game one, but Gallaudet would add runs in the sixth and seventh to bring the game to a 2-2 tie.  Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, Pa.) broke the deadlock with a RBI single to right field in the eighth inning giving the Nittany Lions the winning run.

In game two, the Bison's shaky pitching gave the Nittany Lions bases loaded on three consecutive walks.  Ditro came to the plate and drove a deep ball over the outstretched glove of the center fielder for a three-run triple and sparked Abington to 10 unanswered runs.

The Nittany Lions will return to the diamond at Alverthorpe Park when they face Commonwealth Conference foe Acadia, Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
