Jenkintown, Pa.- The Penn State Abington baseball team dropped a non-conference game against local opponent Arcadia University, 15-13, in 12 innings Tuesday afternoon.
Abington would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning as
Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, Pa.) hit a two-run homerun to left field for the Nittany Lions.
The Knights would strike back with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead.
The Blue and White would regain the lead at 4-3 courtesy of
Fran Caruso's (Philadelphia, Pa.) two-run RBI single.
There would be no scoring until the bottom of the seventh inning as Abington tacked on eight runs in the inning. Arcadia pitcher Matthew Smith walked in four straight Abington runners. The Nittany Lions would take a 12-3 heading into the top of the ninth inning.
That's when the game became interesting.
The resilient Knights put up eight runs of their own in the top of ninth inning to tie the game at 12-12. The big hit in the inning came when Arcadia's Tony Yiantos hit a grand slam off of Abington pitcher
Michael Dunlap (Princeton, N.J.) over the right field fence.
Arcadia would regain the lead in the top of the 10
th inning as Justin Chasmar doubled home Scott Zellers for the 13-12 lead.
Abington would tie game at 13-13 in the bottom of the 10
th inning as
Diego Melendez (Camden, N.J.) reached first on a fielding error scoring Ditro.
The Knights would add two more runs in the top half of the 12
th inning to seal the dramatic comeback victory. Both Ditro and Caruso had three RBI's in the game for the Abington.
Abington (16-16, 10-2 NEAC) will return to action this Friday, May 1, as they travel to Maryland to play Hood College. First pitch is slated for 4:00 p.m.
