Softball Splits Two Against Wilson

Abington, Pa.- The Penn State Abington softball team split a pair of pivotal conference games against the Wilson College Phoenix Sunday afternoon.

Abington fell 3-0 in game one, but rebounded with an 8-0 win (5 innings) in game two.

In game one, the Abington offense was stymied by the pitching of Wilson starter Morgan Newell. Newell went seven innings giving up just four hits and striking out six Abington batters.

Emily Mattes (Middletown, Pa.) was 2-for-3 in the game.

In game two, Abington's bats came alive as the Nittany Lions pounded 11 hits while limiting Wilson to just one.

The Blue and White jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Mattes had a two run RBI double to centerfield, scoring Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Greta Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.).

Ashley Quenzer (Philadelphia, Pa.) led off the bottom of the second inning with a double down the right field line. After Bianca Monterosso (Abington, Pa.) popped out, Sheridan would single up the middle scoring Quenzer to give Abington a 3-0 lead.

Lineman would triple down the right field line scoring Sheridan to give Abington a 4-0 lead.

The Nittany Lions would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning courtesy of a three-run homerun from Lineman to give Abington the commanding 7-0 lead.

Lineman finished game two 2-for-3 with four RBI's.

In six games played this past week, Lineman was 10-for-18 at the plate with 15 RBI's and five homeruns. Her batting for the week was .556, and her slugging percentage was a whopping 1.611.

Jennifer Rakita (Langhorne, Pa.) picked up her fourth win of the year as she scattered just one hit over five innings of work while striking out three Wilson batters.

Abington (18-11-1, 12-6 NEAC) will return to action this Tuesday, April 28, as they close out the regular season by hosting Lancaster Bible College. Game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. while game two is slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
