NEWARK, Nj -Â The Abington baseball team held a 10-0 lead in the fourth inning, but a huge ninth inning comeback by Rutgers-Newark stole the win from the Nittany Lions. They fell 13-12 Monday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium.
Junior,
Ted Smallwood (Athens, N.Y), opened the scoring in the third inning with a double down the left line that drove in
Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa). Later in the inning with bases loaded,
Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) sliced a double to left field driving in two more runs. An error by the shortstop allowed the Nittany Lions to add another run to the board. With
Brandon Mau (Philadelphia, Pa) at the plate, the sophomore drove in another two runs on a single to right field. Another error by the shortstop tacked on two runs for Abington, as they finished the inning up 8-0.
In the top of the fourth, Abington added another two runs on consecutive singles by
Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, Pa) and
Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) to give the Nittany Lions a 10-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark began its comeback in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits.
In the sixth inning, the Scarlet Raiders notched two more runs on a two singles and added another in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly.
Max German (Newtown, Pa.) stole two bases in the top of the eighth, getting to third, before Ditro skied a ball to deep center field. This allowed German to tag up and score the 11
th run for Abington.
Rutgers-Newark answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, and made it an 11-8 game going into the ninth.
Guaglionona singled in another run at the top of the inning giving the Nittany Lions a 12-8 cushion.
The Scarlet Raiders mounted a stunning comeback in the bottom of the inning. They scored five runs on four hits, including a two out walk-off double to end the game.
Abington looks to rebound at home tomorrow afternoon, facing New Jersey City University at Alverthope Park, at 3:30 p.m.Â
