ABINGTON, Pa – After mounting a 6
th inning comeback, the Penn State Abington baseball team's rally was cut short due to the rain. The Nittany Lions fell to the visiting New Jersey City University Knights 11-9 in six innings, Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Knights jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first, scoring three runs on three singles.
Â
Abington answered in the bottom half, when
Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) doubled down the left line advancing two runs.Â
Brandon Mau (Philadelphia, Pa.) added another run driving a hard ground ball to the shortstop, allowing the runner to score.
Â
In the top of the second, the Knights added another six runs to their total from seven singles.
Â
The Nittany Lions didn't respond until the bottom of the fourth inning.
Pat Fitzgerald (Warrington, Pa.) drove a sacrifice fly deep to right field allowing the runner to tag up and score Abington's fourth run. Finally, Abington tallied another run on an error from the third baseman making it 9-5 at the end of the fourth inning.
Â
Rain began to fall making conditions hard for both teams. New Jersey City tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth inning increasing the lead to 11-5.
Â
Abington responded in the bottom half of the inning with four runs.
Tom Ditro (Philadelphia, Pa) sparked the offense with a single to left center field to drive in the first run. With runners on first and second, Pletscher drove a double to the right field wall to drive in another two runs. An error by the third baseman allowed Pletscher to score the ninth run, making it 11-9.
Â
Unfortunately, the Nittany Lions would not be able to see their comeback completed, as the game was called due to the heavy rain.
Â
The baseball team has announced that tomorrow's game at Neumann University has been canceled with no make up date announced. The Nittany Lions will return to action Saturday as they host Keuka at 1:00 p.m.
