Rodriguez Breaks Records in 87-68 Victory Over Wells

AURORA, N.Y. -  Freshman guard Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) dropped 40 points to break a single-game record as the Penn State Abington Women's Basketball Team streaked to its fifth conference win over Wells College 87-68, Sunday afternoon.  The Wells College Women's Basketball Team had not given up forty points in the history of the program until today.

Abington moves to third in the North Eastern Athletic Conference South Standings at 5-2 in the conference.

The Express controlled the first period until a layup by Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) spurred an 8-2 run and gave the Nittany Lions the edge 18-12.

Wells entered the period behind, but battled its way to a 24-23 lead with 5:21 left on the clock.  Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) tied the game when she hit her shot from behind the arc, although the Express ended the half up 35-33.

Out of the break, Rodriguez fired a jump shot to energize the sluggish offense and spurred an 8-0 run to take back the lead in the third period. The Nittany Lions gained momentum on another shot from Rodriguez from downtown to swing an 11-2 run end the period.

In the fourth period, the Nittany Lions held onto their lead, as they hit 18 of 20 free throws to put away the Express.

Senior Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) also recorded double figures for the Nittany Lions with 26 points for the evening. Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.) led the team on the boards with 12 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions look to continue their hot streak as they travel to the College of Saint Elizabeth on Tuesday January 19 with tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
