MORRISTOWN, N.J. - Scoring 28 points in the second quarter propelled the Penn State Abington Women's Basketball Team to its fourth straight win, as they defeated the College of Saint Elizabeth 84-73 on Tuesday evening.
The Nittany Lions move to second place in the North Eastern Athletic South Standings with the win, attaining a 10-2 overall record and 6-2 in the conference.
Sophomore Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon, Pa.) set the tone early, as she hit the first shot of the game for Abington from downtown. Keyes hit another three two minutes later to cap a 10-2 opening run in the first period. The Eagles streaked on a 8-0 by putting up points in the paint, but Keyes drained yet another three-point shot with a minute remaining. This gave Abington a commanding 22-13 lead.
In the second period, senior Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the first possession and drove through the lane to hit her layup and draw the foul. Later in the period, Keyes hit her fourth shot from behind the arc to give the Nittany Lions a 20 point advantage. In the final four minutes the Eagles started an 8-0 run, but freshman Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) answered with a three-point shot. Rodriguez followed with a steal to hit yet another from behind the arc. The Nittany Lions held a 21 point lead going into the break, beating the Eagles 50-29.
The Eagles clawed back in the third period by dominating the boards and scored 14 points in the paint. Five points from Keyes helped the Nittany Lions keep the edge, but the Eagles brought their deficit down to 14 points going into the fourth quarter.
Senior Mallory Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.) took the first possession in for the layup and drew a foul to get the Nittany Lions back on track. Saint Elizabeth tried to rally, but fouls slowed their comeback, as the Nittany Lions hit 11-of-12 free throws to close out the game.
Elum lead the Nittany Lions with 27 points and Keyes followed with 22 points - going 6-of-12 from three. Mugnier chipped in a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The women look to continue their streak as they host Bryn Athyn on Saturday January 23, at 3:00 p.m.
