ABINGTON, Pa. – A shot with three seconds remaining by senior
Yusef Savage (Philadelphia, Pa.), propelled the Penn State Abington men's basketball team to its first win of the year in a 63-61 victory over Gallaudet, Tuesday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions improve to 1-8 and 1-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference, while the Bison fall to 3-5 and 0-2 in conference.
Gallaudet took an early 5-0 lead, but two consecutive three's from
Devin Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Spencer Bartron (Camden Del.) gave the Nittany Lions momentum.
Abington went on a 10-5 run, fighting through tough defense, but the Bison continued to hang around throughout the first half.
In the second half, the Bison came out of the gate with a hot hand and took the lead at the 18:08 mark.
Over the next few minutes the lead changed hands five times, until Gallaudet tied the game at 36-36 with 13 minutes remaining.
The game remained within three points until Jones drained a shot from downtown to give the Nittany Lions a four-point advantage with under five minutes to go.
Clutch shooting at the free-throw line tied the game with 26 seconds to go. In the final possession, Savage got the ball and shot a contested jumper that won the Nittany Lions their first game of the season.
Abington was led by Jones with 24 points, while Savage chipped in a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds.
The Nittany Lions look to continue their strong play when they host Wilson College Thursday January 7, at 1:00 p.m.
