ABINGTON, Pa. – A huge first quarter from the Penn State Abington women's basketball team helped them cruise to a 77-43 win over Wilson College on Thursday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions rebound after their loss to Gallaudet and improve to 6-1 and 2-1 in the NEAC, while Wilson falls to 2-4 and 0-3 in conference.
Freshman
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the tipoff and drove it directly to the lane for a layup to set the tone for the first period.
Abington ran to a 10-0 lead before the Phoenix could get on to the board. The Nittany Lions held Wilson defensively to 8 points before going on another 10-0 to close out the first period.
In the second period, the Phoenix kept pace with the Nittany Lions'
Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Elizabeth Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) with a combined 11 points.
Coming out of the break Abington returned to form with an 11-1 run sparked by back to back three-pointers from Elum and Jones. Â The Nittany Lions were strong on the boards only allowing two rebounds the entire period.
The Phoenix outscored the Nittany Lions 10-8 in the final period.
Elum led the Nittany Lions with 18 points, while Rodriguez and Jones chipped in 12 and 11 points respectively.
Mallory Mugnier (Abington, Pa.) dominated the competition on the boards with 15 rebounds and blocked five shots in the game.
The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible to face off on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
