LANGHORNE, Pa. – Head coach
Shayla Johnson earned her first career for the Penn State Abington women's basketball team with an 82-68 decision over Cairn, on Monday evening. With the win the Nittany Lions improve to 1-1 before their home opener.
The Nittany Lions were lethal from behind the arc going 17-29 from downtown. Sophomore
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) was on fire shooting 73 percent from the floor and 71 from behind the arc for 27 points.
Sophomore
Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) went 5-of-6 from behind the arch for an 83 percent average and chipped in 19 points.
In a tight first quarter Rodriguez broke open the game with her shot from behind the arc to help give the Nittany Lions a 22-15 advantage.
The Nittany Lions started out hot in the second quarter with three consecutive three pointers, to help Abington take a ten point lead going into the half.
In the third quarter the Highlanders came out with energy, and shrunk the deficit off of a hot streak from Cairn's Madelyn Brodish and Kendra Stum. Neither team could break away until
Brittany Keyes ( Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) spurred a 14-3 run with a bucket from down town.
Abington closed out the game with three more shots from behind the arc to finish off the Highlanders.
Tomorrow night the Nittany Lions will host Notre Dame of Maryland at 6:00 p.m.
