ABINGTON, Pa. – Freshman
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted 25 points, but the Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker to Morrisville State 71-69 on Sunday afternoon.
The Nittany Lions fall to 14-7 overall and 10-7 in conference, sitting in fourth place in the NEAC South Standings.
Rodriguez recorded a double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds, while senior
Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 16 points and added nine assists for the afternoon.
In the first quarter, Abington took the lead with two shots behind the arc from Elum and Rodriguez in the first five minutes of action. Â The Nittany Lions pushed their advantage to nine points, but the Mustangs finished on a 6-2 run.
In the fast paced second period, the Nittany Lions held the lead until the final three minutes when the Mustangs went into the break on a 5-0 run.
Both teams came out firing in the second half, but the Mustangs pushed their advantage to eight with five minutes on the clock. The Nittany Lions dominated the boards with four layups to even the game in the final minute of the period.
In the fourth, neither team led by more than four points with seven lead changes. Abington trailed with twenty seconds to go, but Elum hit a clutch shot from outside the arc to put the game within one point. The Nittany Lions held the ball down two with six seconds to go, but Elum could not hit the final shot.
Abington returns to action when they travel to Wilson College on Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m.
