ABINGTON, Pa.- The Penn State Abington women's basketball team snapped its three-game losing streak with clutch free-throw shooting to put away Bryn Athyn 74-72, Thursday night.
The Nittany Lions improve to 11-5 overall and 7-5 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference keeping them in playoff contention.
Senior Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) capitalized on her shots from downtown in the first period, but the Nittany Lions still couldn't edge Bryn Athyn.
Two shots outside the arc from sophomore guard Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) helped gain a slight lead in the second quarter. The Lions answered with a 6-0 run, but Bryn Athyn's foul trouble allowed the Nittany Lions to claw their way back into the game. With eight seconds remaining, Elum drove through the lane and sunk her layup that gave Abington a 40-38 lead at the break.
Abington hit its first three shots on the way to a 9-1 run in the opening minutes of the third quarter. The Lions crept to within three points in the final minutes, but a three-ball from Keyes helped the Nittany Lions stay ahead.
In the fourth quarter, both teams followed each other's shots. With under a minute to go in the game, Abington held a one point advantage until Elum sunk her layup and drew a foul. Her clutch free throw would put the game just out of reach for the Lions.
Elum lead Abington with 27 points while Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) added double-double performances.
Abington will travel to SUNY Poly on Saturday with tip-off slated for 3:00 p.m.
