Nittany Lions Triumph in Struggle with SUNY Cobleskill

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Down by six at the start of the fourth quarter, the Penn State Abington women's basketball team rallied to force overtime, defeating SUNY Cobleskill on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improve to 12-6 in conference and 8-6 overall in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Freshman Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) and junior Janaiah Elum (Philadelphia, Pa.) dropped 20 and 19 points, respectively. Rodriguez dominated the boards with 17 rebounds for the afternoon.

The Fighting Tigers jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first four minutes, but Abington shut down Cobleskill's offense and held them to three points for the rest of the quarter. Elum lead a comeback, draining a shot from behind the arc and adding two more points from the line.

Abington jumped out with a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, but SUNY Cobleskill responded by holding the Nittany Lions to two points for the rest of the period.  Strong three-point shooting gave the Fighting Tigers the edge going into the break.

Both teams battled in the third quarter but the Fighting Tigers added to their advantage with good shooting from the floor to pad their lead.

With two minutes on the clock, Abington rallied in the fourth period and two consecutive layups gave the Nittany Lions their first lead of the second half.  Cobleskill fought back by taking a three point advantage with one final possession for the Nittany Lions. With 10 seconds on the clock, the ball was in Elum's hands as she tied the game with her shot from behind the arc forcing overtime.

The Nittany Lions put the Fighting Tigers away in overtime by hitting their free-throws at the line.

The Nittany Lions will return home to host Penn State Berks on Wednesday night at 8:00 p.m.
