JENKINTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Ted Smallwood (Athens, NY) dominated game one with 11 strikeouts to lead the Penn State Abington baseball team in a sweep over the City College of New York on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took game one 3-0 and won game two by an 8-3 decision.
The Nittany Lions improve to 6-11 for the season.
Smallwood started the day off with his best performance on the mound of his career. The senior earned his second career shutout while he only surrendered five hits and two walks in seven innings. The 11 strikerouts were a career high for Smallwood.
With bases loaded in the third inning of game one,
Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) knocked a hard ground ball to the shortshop that scored the first run of the game.
In the fifth inning the Nittany Lions extended their lead when
Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) drove a ball to deep right field for a two run double.
In game two, the Beavers were first on the board with two runs in the top of the first.
The Nittany Lions answered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs. Guaglionona knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly. A double from
Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) and single from
Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove in the next two runs.
In the next inning
Max German (Newtown, Pa) smashed his pitch over the right field fence for his first home run of the season.
Abington put the game away in the fourth inning with three more runs.
The team returns to the field tomorrow when they host Stockton for a doubleheader tomorrow at noon.
