JENKINTOWN, Pa.--The Penn State Abington baseball team (7-12) split a non-conference doubleheader with the visiting Stockton University Ospreys (3-12) Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park. Sophomore
Matt McDonough tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener as the Nittany Lions eked out a 1-0 decision while the Ospreys registered an 8-2 triumph in the nightcap.
McDonough picked up his second victory of the season with a seven-inning gem. He struck out eight Ospreys and walked none while allowing just two singles on the afternoon. Abington gave McDonough all the support he would need in the bottom of the second when
Trey Guaglionona led off the inning with a double to center. Guaglionona moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Anthony Pletscher and came in to score on a ground out to the right side by
Max Perilstein.
McDonough was able to work out of a jam in the top of the fifth after Stephen Struble singled through the right side to lead things off. Tyler Hobbs bunted Struble over to second and Struble scampered to third on a wild pitch. But McDonough retired the next two batters on a ground out and an infield popup to retire the side.
Stockton's Dylan Warburton also pitched well but took the loss, despite surrendering just three base hits to the Nittany Lions. Leadoff hitter
Max German had a pair and Guaglionona was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored.
In game two after a scoreless first inning, Stockton plated a pair of runs on three base hits in the top of the second. Struble and Bryan Bessinger both doubled in runs for the Ospreys. Stockton's Nick LaPorta belted a two-run homerun over the left field fence in the top of the third to extend the Osprey lead to 4-0. Abington got one back in the bottom of the frame on a run-scoring groundout to short by
Joslin Carino. After a perfect top half of the fourth for starter
Diego Melendez, the Nittany Lions tacked on another run in their half of the inning when Carino came up in the clutch once again, lifting a sacrifice fly to center to plate pinch-runner
Dante Millilo to cut the Osprey lead to 4-2.
Bessinger made it 5-2 Stockton in the top of the sixth with an RBI-single to right which brought around Matt Mangarella.
Greg Mugnier came in to relieve Melendez and induced a 4-6-3 double play to limit further damage.
After the Abington hitters were retired in order in the bottom half of the sixth, Stockton extended its advantage to 8-2 in the top of the seventh. Vaughn Champion laced a two-run single to center to make it 7-2 and eventually came around to score on an Abington throwing error.
The Nittany Lions were unable to rally in the bottom of the seventh despite a one-out single by German.
Melendez struck out six batters in his 5.1 innings of work but allowed five earned runs and a pair of walks in defeat. Aidan Ryan earned his first victory of the season for Stockton by working five innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
Abington will continue its homestand when it hosts Rowan University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
