Kelly Leads Women's Lacrosse to 10-8 Win

RIVERDALE, NY – Behind  four goals from Katelyn Kelly (Springfield, Pa.), the Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team earned a 10-8 win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 1-1 for the season.

Kelly scored her four goals on five shots and led the Nittany Lions with four ground balls. Sophomore Michaela Mast (Pottstown, Pa.) added three goals off her three shots in the game.

Sophomore Jessica Watts (Abington, Pa.) kicked off the scoring for the Nittany Lions four minutes into the game off the left wing.  Mast scored her first goal of the season only minutes later to take a 2-0 lead.

The Dolphins answered with two consecutive goals to tie the game.

With 14 minutes off the clock, Mast added her second goal with a shot from the circle. Abington held the slim margin until the final five minutes when Kelly scored her first two goals of the season.  With two minutes remaining, Watt added her second goal of the game to give the Nittany Lions a 6-2 lead going into the break.

In the second half, Kelly scored another goal to push the Nittany Lions to a 7-2 lead.

The Dolphins started to rally with two consecutive goals, but Bridget Meade (Willow Grove, Pa.) put the Nittany Lions back on the board with her first goal of the season.

Both teams traded goals, but the Nittany Lions held a 10-6 lead with under 20 minutes left on the clock.

The College of Mount Saint Vincent tried to overtake Abington, but solid goalkeeping from Jill Varriano (Staten Island, NY) pushed the Nittany Lions to their first win of the season.

Abington returns to the field to take on New Paltz on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
