READING, Pa. – Behind a strong performance from
Matt McDonough (Abington, Pa.) on the mound the Penn State Abington baseball team stole a series split from host Penn State Berks on Sunday afternoon. McDonough's nine strikeouts in nine innings of work were enough to give Abington a 7-5 win in game one, but Berks took game two 11-2 at Hintz Athletic Field.
Abington moves to 11-16 for the season and 2-2 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
In game one, Abington jumped out in front in the second inning with an RBI single down the left line from
Tyler DiPatri (Pedricktown, NJ). DiPatri crossed the plate moments later off a defensive error from Berks.
Abington added to its lead in the fifth inning with four runs, highlighted by a single from
Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) through the left side that drove in two runs.
Berks would give the Nittany Lions a scare in the bottom half of the inning when they answered with five runs to cut the lead to 6-5.
DiPatri drew a walk with bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning to give Abington a two run cushion and hold on against Berks.
Berks took a three run lead in the first inning of game two, but
Dante Millilo (Philadelphia, Pa.) put Abington on the board with an RBI single.
In the sixth inning DiPatri knocked his first collegiate home run over the right field wall to cut the lead. Berks would answer in the bottom half of the inning with seven runs to put the game out of reach.
Abington will return home to host John Jay College on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
