ABINGTON, Pa. – A walk off double from
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa) pushed the Penn State Abington softball team to a series sweep over the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon. Abington took game one with a 5-3 victory and rallied past the Eagles in game two 6-5.
Abington honored seniors
Ashley Quenzer (Philadelphia, Pa.),
Melissa Craig (Westville, N.J.) and
Nicole Battaglio (King of Prussia, Pa.) for their final season with the Nittany Lions before they graduate.
The Nittany Lions move to 11-11 overall for the season and 7-3 in the conference.
In game one, the Nittany Lions took an early lead with an RBI single from Quenzer in the second inning. The Nittany Lions added another two runs in the third inning, highlighted by an RBI double to left field from
Danielle Hebling (Warminster, Pa.).
The Eagles chipped away at the lead with a run in the fourth inning, but Dougherty responded adding an RBI in the bottom half.
Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored another run driving a long ball for a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
In the final inning, the Eagles threatened with the go ahead runner at the plate, but
Emily Wrenn (Hatboro, Pa.) worked through the inning to earn her fifth win of the year.
In game two, the Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Hebling knotted things up in the second inning with a triple down the right field line.
The Eagles pulled ahead in the fifth inning with three runs off of two hits to take a 5-2 lead.
A sharp single up the middle from Lineman drove in two runs in the fifth inning to help the Nittany Lions claw their way back.
After two quick innings, the Nittany Lions down 5-4 but up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one runner on first, Lineman drove a double down the left line to tie the game. Dougherty stepped up to the plate and drove Lineman in with a walk-off double.
The Nittany Lions will look to continue their streak when they travel to Wesley College on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
