WILLOW GROVE, Pa. After 21 innings throughout the doubleheader, the Penn State Abington baseball team swept Cazenovia College with a walk off thriller on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took game one 9-5 and earned a 5-4 walk off win in 12 innings in game two.
The Nittany Lions improve to 18-18 overall and move to the top of the NEAC standings with an 8-2 record in conference.
The Wildcats opened game one with a 2-0 lead by the second inning, but a double to center field for
Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) put the Nittany Lions on the board. Cazenovia took the lead back in the fifth inning but, the Nittany Lions would answer three runs of their own. A single from
Ted Smallwood (Athens, NY.) put two runs across the plate. The Nittany Lions added four more runs in the seventh inning to put away the Wildcats.
Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) started off game two with an RBI single down the left line to put the Nittany Lions out in front. The Nittany Lions held a 3-1 lead going into the seventh inning, but the Wildcats rallied to tie the game with the go ahead run on third base.
Greg Mugnier (Glenside, Pa.) stepped onto the mound and got the Nittany Lions out of the inning with a strikeout to end the inning. Cazenovia broke the silence in the 12
th inning but Abington answered in the bottom half with a game winning single to left field from freshman
Shane Smith (Philadelphia, Pa.).
The Nittany Lions will honor their seniors tomorrow when they host SUNY Poly at 12:00 at Upper Moreland High school.
