Baseball Sweeps SUNY Poly on Historic Day

WILLOW GROVE, Pa. – Head coach Joe Pavlow earned his 150th career win in a series sweep for the Penn State Abington baseball team over SUNY Poly on Sunday afternoon. The Nittany Lions secured a 7-4 decision in game one, and coasted to a 15-1 win in game two.

Abington remains on top of the NEAC standings with a 10-2 record in conference and 20-18 mark overall.

The Nittany Lions honored seniors Ted Smallwood (Athens, NY.) and Anthony Pletscher (Hatfield, Pa.) in their final home game of the season.

The Wildcats were first on the board in game one off of a two run double down the right field line.

Junior Pat Fitzgerald (Warrington, Pa.) drove in the Nittany Lions' first run off of a double to left field. Pletscher stepped up to the plate and rocketed the pitch for a two run homerun to give the Nittany Lions a 4-2 lead.

The Nittany Lions put the game out of reach in the fifth inning with two more runs.

In game two, SUNY Poly scored the first run, but would not get past the plate again after a solid performance from junior pitcher Diego Melendez (Camden, N.J.). Melendez only allowed four hits in his six innings of work and recorded three strikeouts.

Abington's offense exploded in the first inning with a triple to right center field from Trey Guaglionona (Abington, Pa.) to drive in three runs.

In the second inning, sophomore Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) tied the single season record for doubles of 18 to drive in another two runs for the Nittany Lions.

Two singles from the Nittany Lions added another four runs to give Abington a 10-1 lead in the second inning.

In the fifth inning, Meyers broke the single season record for doubles with his 19th and third of the day which spurred three runs and put the game out of reach.

Abington looks to clinch the NEAC and host the conference tournament when they travel to Gallaudet on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
