WASHINGTON, DC – Two dominant pitching performances from
Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) and
Emily Wrenn (Hatboro, Pa.) earned the Penn State Abington softball team a series sweep over Gallaudet on Sunday afternoon. Abington cruised through game one with an 11-1 win and edged out the Bison in game two 3-2.
Head coach
David Hoch earned his 100th career win with the program in the 3-2 decision over Gallaudet.
The Nittany Lions improve to 17-15 overall and 9-7 in the NEAC.
In game one, Dougherty drove in a run in the first inning off a sacrifice fly to left field. Junior
Breanna Lineman (Philadelphia, Pa.) smashed her third home run of the year to give the Nittany Lions a 5-0 lead in the second inning.
Greta Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) added another run to the board with a sacrifice fly to center field and
Nicole Battaglio (King of Prussia, Pa.) chipped in an RBI single in the fourth inning.
Abington added four runs to the board in the sixth inning, highlighted by a triple to left center field from Sheridan.
In game two, Abington jumped out in front after
Samantha Friend (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored off of a fielder's choice. The Bison answered in the bottom half of the inning off an RBI single.
The Nittany Lions pulled out in front in the fifth inning on a RBI double from
Ashley Quenzer (Philadelphia, Pa.) and
Jessica Carp (Dresher, Pa.) added another run to the board in the sixth with a single.
Abington will return home on Wednesday afternoon to host Wilson College for a rematch at 3:00 p.m.
