Softball Splits Doubleheader with Lancaster Bible

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball opened its conference slate with a doubleheader against Lancaster Bible.  The Charges took game one by a 5-1 decision, but the Nittany Lions won game two 4-2, on Friday afternoon.

Abington moves to 7-9 overall and 1-1 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

In the beginning of game one, the Nittany Lions struggled defensively and allowed two unearned runs past the plate. The chargers added two more runs in the second inning to extend their lead.

Abington chipped away at the deficit with an RBI double from Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.), but the Nittany Lions could only muster four hits for game one.

In game two, Jennifer Rakita (Langhorne, Pa.) dominated on the mound as she held the Chargers to only five hits with seven strikeouts for the game.

Dougherty started off game two with a single to left field that drove in two runs to give Abington the lead. Later in the third Inning Greta Sheridan (Horsham, Pa.) added another run for the Nittany Lions when she drove a deep ball to center field that allowed another run to score.

Rakita took to down the chargers in order in the top of the seventh that closed her second win of the season.

The Nittany Lions will have the weekend off before they host Penn State Berks on Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
