WASHINGTON, DC – A big night from sophomore
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) aided the Penn State Abington women's basketball team to a 73-57 win on Thursday evening. Abington climbs up the NEAC standings with a 4-2 record in the conference and a 6-5 mark overall.
Rodriguez finished the night with a double-double as she earned 21 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore
Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) followed with 18 points.
In a tight first quarter the Bison took an early advantage but the lead changed hands six times between both teams. The Nittany Lions pressed Gallaudet and forced them into seven turnovers to help shift momentum in their favor. A last second jump shot from the Bison tied the game 18-18 going into the break.
The defense for the Nittany Lions tightened in the second quarter, when they held the Bison to only eight points for the quarter. Six points from freshman
Alyssa O'Mara (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) helped Abington to an 8-0 run to pull away from Gallaudet at the half.
A pair of three-pointers from
Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) and Hayes pushed the Nittany Lions lead to double digits in the third quarter. Hayes would go on to score 15 of her 18 points in the third quarter to help the Nittany Lions stay in control of the game.
The Nittany Lions closed out the contest in the fourth quarter with clutch free throw shooting.
Abington will return home when they host Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon.
