Rodriguez Leads Nittany Lions Past Penn College, 66-50

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – A huge performance from sophomore Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) drove the Penn State Abington women's basketball team to a 66-50 win on Wednesday night. Abington improves to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

Rodriguez fell just shy of a triple-double with 23 points, 22 rebounds and seven assists in the win. Sophomore Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) chipped in 20 points.

Six first quarter points from Hayes helped the Nittany Lions take the early lead, but the Wildcats controlled the boards and earned tough points in the paint to keep pace.

Rodriguez took control in the second quarter with three consecutive buckets that pushed the Nittany Lions to a 6-2 run.  The defense suffocated the Wildcats offense as they forced more turnovers (6) than points given up in the period (4), for a commanding 30-15 lead at the half.

Back on the court after the half, Abington traded blows with Penn College, answering the Wildcats before they could go on a run. Penn College cut the lead to seven points within the final two minutes of the quarter, but Abington pushed its lead back to double digits as they finished on a 6-0 advantage.

In the fourth quarter Abington pushed its lead to 22 points after Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) drained her three-ball to keep the game out of reach.

Abington will return home to host Wells College this Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
