Nittany Lions Hold Off Wells College, 71-64

ABINGTON, Pa. – All five starters hit double-digit scoring for the Penn State Abington women's basketball team in a 71-64 win over Wells College on Saturday afternoon. Abington improves to 8-6 for the season and 6-3 in the NEAC.

Sophomore Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned a double-double with 20 points and 15 rebounds. She also led the Nittany Lions in assists in the game.

A fast start in the first quarter saw the Nittany Lions take an early 12-3 lead highlighted by a three-ball from Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, PA.).  Wells had trouble with the high energy Nittany Lions defense and could only get four points from the floor. The Express added to their total with three points from the line.

Senior guard Ashida Cooper from Wells rallied the express with 17 of their 19 second quarter points to keep pace with the Nittany Lions.  With three minutes remaining the Express took a two point lead, but Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, Pa.) sparked the Nittany Lions offense to finish on a 10-0 run to go into the half.

Again the Nittany Lions jumped out to a double-digit lead in the third quarter, aided by 12 unanswered points. Senior center Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) helped the Nittany Lions take their lead with 8 third quarter points.

Going into the fourth quarter the Nittany Lions held a 13 point advantage, but throughout the period Cooper's hot hand returned to help the Express within four points. The Express' rally took a major blow when Cooper fouled out of the game and Abington put the game out of reach with clutch free throw shooting.

The Nittany Lions will look to stay hot when they host Keuka College tomorrow at noon.
