Eagles Slip Past Nittany Lions, 59-57

ABINGTON, Pa. – A second half surge helped the Nittany Lions come within one shot of upsetting the College of St. Elizabeth, but luck was not on their side as they fell 59-57, on Wednesday night. Abington falls to 8-8, and 6-5 in the conference.

Before the game the Nittany Lions unveiled the 2014-15 NEAC championship banner and honored the team for their historic accomplishment.

The lone active member of the 2014-15 squad Madison Kimball (Jenkintown, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions with a double-double. The senior center netted 17 points and racked up 10 rebounds on the evening. Sophomore Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) chipped in 15 points and 15 rebounds.

In the first period the Eagles pounded the boards with 16 of their 21 points coming from the paint. The Nittany Lions fell behind quickly because of poor shooting from the floor, and soon found themselves down by double-digits.

Both defenses dominated in the second quarter with 15 points scored between them.  Abington couldn't make up ground on the Eagles as they walked into the half with a 30-17 lead.

The Nittany Lions couldn't take an advantage over the Eagles down by 12 pints in the third quarter. Five points down the stretch from Kimball helped the Nittany Lions cut the lead to eight points.

In the fourth period, Abington clawed its way back into the game on a 13-4 run that gave them a one point advantage off of a jumper from Rodriguez.  The Nittany Lions held the slim lead all the way to the final minute but a clutch shot from downtown took back the lead for the Eagles. Down four points with ten seconds on the clock Rodriguez hit a three-ball to bring the game to within a point.  The Eagles hit only one of their two free throws down the stretch, but Abington couldn't convert its shot to push the game to overtime.

The Nittany Lions will be on the road Saturday when they face cross-town rival Bryn Athyn at 1:00 p.m.
