NEWARK, NJ – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team stormed out to an early lead and never looked back on their way to a 96-68 win over St. Joe's-LI at the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic in The Golden Dome. The Nittany Lions move back to 1-1 for the season.
Junior guard
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) led the way with 27 points and was aided by
Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA),
Iman Richmond (Chicago, IL), and
Brittany Keyes (Huntingdon Valley, PA) all hit double-digit scoring in the win. Freshman forward Tola
Tola Oguntase (Egg Harbor Township, NJ) broke out with her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 boards.
The Nittany Lions were on fire right out of the gate setting the tone with three shots from behind the arch on their way to an 11-0 run in the first three minutes of action. The Golden Eagles finally got onto the board, but the Nittany Lions answered every shot to hold onto a double digit lead in the first quarter.
 Again the Nittany Lions started out the period strong with an 8-2 run in the first minute of play. Richmond took over the period with eight points an assist and a rebound all within the first few minutes of the period, and helped the Nittany Lions push their lead to a 20 point margin. Abington held on to a comfortable 52-31 lead going into the break.
In the second half the Golden Eagles slowly chipped away at the Nittany Lions lead to 14 points, but Keyes shifted momentum back in Abington's favor with her shot from downtown. Her shot sparked another huge run for the Nittany Lions outscoring the Golden Eagles by a 12-2 margin.
Abington didn't get complacent in the fourth quarter with the huge lead, pushing their winning margin to 28 points for its first win of the season.
The Nittany Lions will continue the Tip-Off Classic tomorrow when they face off against Cedar Crest College at 1:00 p.m.
