ABINGTON, PA. – With only a few seconds remaining the Penn State Abington men's basketball team held a slim lead over Arcadia University, but a last second thee dealt the Nittany Lions a heart breaking 99-96 loss on Saturday afternoon. Abington drops to 1-1 for the season.
Sophomore guard
Terrance Reese (Philadelphia, PA) put up a career high 26 points and hit 6-of-12 of his shots from three. Senior guard
Kevin Raymond (Chalfont, PA) followed in scoring with 14 points and three assists.
The Nittany Lions took an early lead in the first half behind some clutch three-point shooting from
John Ryan (Warminster, PA) and Reese. The Nittany Lions and Knights traded shots with Abington holding a slim lead in the first five minutes of action. The Knights slowly pulled ahead minutes later shooting all over the floor. Clutch free throw shooting from the Knights Steve Pendleton, followed by his shot from behind the arch gave the visitors a tight advantage. The Nittany Lions started to struggle and get into foul trouble with the Knights converting their shots from the stripe. Arcadia pushed its lead to double-digits, but a three-pointer from
Pernell Ghee (Germantown, PA) with only 30 seconds in half cut the margin.
Out of the gate in the second half the Nittany Lions pressed the Knights and forced key turnovers to help them claw their way back into the game. Five minutes into the second half the Nittany Lions erased the deficit, getting their points in the lane. Ghee tied the game with 13:50 left on the clock, but the Nittany Lions couldn't shift momentum to take the lead. The Knights pushed forward and took another seven point advantage. Junior forward
Jordan Lomax (West Haven, CT) turned the tide, out muscling the Knights under the basket for his tough bucket. Lomax sparked a seven point streak to tie the game, and freshman
Devin Hill (Philadelphia, PA) ignited the Nittany Lions with his three-pointer to energize the Athletic Building. Arcadia battled and kept the game within striking distance until Josh Scott sunk a heart breaking three pointer to finish off the Nittany Lions.
Abington will look to rebound after the loss on Tuesday night when they host Penn State Brandywine at 8:00 p.m.
