Nittany Lions are NEAC Champions after 1-0 Win Over SUNY Poly

ABINGTON, Pa. With under four minutes in the game, the Penn State Abington men's soccer team was stuck in a scoreless draw with SUNY Poly, but a stunning goal from Hernando Villamil (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted the game winner to help the Nittany Lions to their first NEAC Tournament Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions earned their first ever North Eastern Athletic Conference Championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA DIII men's soccer tournament. With the NEAC tournament finished, the Nittany Lions continue to shatter their season win record with a 15-6 mark over their phenomenal campaign.

Throughout the tournament the Nittany Lions defense shut down every opponent they faced, and did not allow a goal in over 270 minutes of action with three consecutive shutouts.

During the first half the Nittany Lions earned plenty of chances to get their goal, but SUNY Poly keeper Alexander Gigliotti made multiple stunning saves to keep Abington off the board. The Nittany Lions weren't the only team with dangerous chances, the Wildcats tested the Ty Morris (Flemington, NJ) but the sophomore goalkeeper blocked their chances.

In the second half neither team could break though because of the stellar goal keeping for both sides, but with four minutes left in the game Michael Albers (Southampton, Pa.) gave Villamil the ball at the top of the box. The junior forward cut in to beat the defender, and fired a perfect top drawer shot to the right post to win the game.

For his efforts during the tournament, Villamil was named the NEAC tournament MVP helping the Nittany Lions make history.

Next Abington will enter its first NCAA DIII Men's Soccer Tournament with a time and opponent to be determined. Tomorrow the Nittany Lions will be in the Lares Cafeteria for the NCAA DIII selection show at 1:30 p.m. to find out their next opponent.
