Rodriguez hits Milestone in 76-67 win over Delaware Valley

ABINGTON, Pa. - Junior guard Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA) hit a career milestone and energized the Penn State Abington women's basketball team to a come from behind 76-67 win over Delaware Valley University on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions continue their win streak with 5-1 overall record.

In the second quarter she became the fourth player in Nittany Lions history to score 1000 points after a phenomenal day. Rodriguez dominated the game with 26 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists while freshmanIman Richmond (Chicago, IL) put up a career high 20 points.

Points came easily in the first few minutes of play.  The Aggies hit their first two shots to take the lead, but Abington was back ahead only seconds later.  The lead changed hands 14 times in the first quarter in the back-and-forth game.  A layup from Richmond with 30 seconds to play in the first quarter broke the deadlock and gave the Nittany Lions a slim advantage. The Aggies tied the game with only seconds left in the period by capitalizing on a pair of free-throws.

The Nittany Lions took back the lead in the second period after Rodriguez knocked down three shots to spark the offense.  Delaware Valley guard Ashley Smink heated up and drained her three to give the Aggies the lead once again.  With 3:24 on the clock Rodriguez earned a foul and sunk both free-throws to score her 1000th career point for the Nittany Lions. A last second layup for the Aggies gave them a 41-37 lead at the break.

In the third period the Aggies held the lead for the entire quarter, but never could pull away from the Nittany Lions. Richmond heated up hitting clutch three-balls to keep the Nittany Lions on pace with the Aggies.

Richmond picked up where she left off with her shot from behind the arch to kick off the scoring in the fourth period.  Her 10 fourth quarter points were good enough to help the Nittany Lions outscore the Aggies 22-11, and seal the victory for Abington.

The Nittany Lions will face a tough road test when travel to Penn State Berks next Tuesday evening at 8:00 p.m.
