Women's Basketball Tops Wilson in Thriller, 80-77

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – Senior Symantha Marrero (Philadelphia, PA), and freshman Iman Richmond (Chicago, IL) both hit career highs in a huge come from behind 80-77 win over Wilson College on Saturday afternoon.  The Nittany Lions improve to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Marrero led all scorers with a career high 27 points, and right behind her, Richmond netted 25 points to combine for 52 of the teams 80 points.  Senior center Grace Dewey (Falls Church, Va.) dominated the boards again with her double-double, scoring 13 points and scooping up 15 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions got off to another sluggish start in the first quarter down 18-7 in the first five minutes of action.  Marrero shifted momentum with back-to-back three pointers in a 20 second span.  After great shooting from Richmond and Marrero, the Nittany Lions clawed their way back to within six points by the end of the period.

Marrero continued her hot streak in to the second quarter hitting another seven points in the first two minutes of action, but the Phoenix kept pace and held a slim margin.  Dewey finally tied the game with only a minute left on the clock with her three pointer, but Wilson took back the lead going into the break.

The Phoenix came out on fire in the third period and quickly pushed their lead to double digits in the first minutes of play. Abington didn't let the deficit get away from them and came back within seven points down 61-54.

After a quiet first three quarters from junior guard Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, PA), she drained two shots to help the Nittany Lions tie the game 61-61.  Throughout the quarter neither team could pull ahead by more than three points going toe-to-toe on the court.  With 30 seconds left in the game Richmond hit a crucial free-throw to give the Nittany Lions a four point advantage. Wilson earned a layup with 11 seconds, and had a chance to win in the final moments, but Abington held on for the win.

The Nittany Lions will hit the road when they travel to Neumann University on Wednesday December 20th at 6:00 p.m.
