ABINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team erased a 10 point third quarter deficit to rally past SUNY Cobleskill 65-60, on Saturday afternoon. Abington improves 10-11 overall and 8-8 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.
A huge second half for sophomore guard
Shayna Rodriguez (Philadelphia, Pa.) aided her in a 29 point performance that led the team. She recorded her eighth double-double of the season after Rodriguez pulled in 13 rebounds over the afternoon.
The Fighting Tigers opened the period with the hot hand shooting from the floor, but the Nittany Lions kept the game close as they earned tough points in the paint. With two minutes remaining in the period the Nittany Lions tied the contest, and finished the half with a 6-0 run.
Cobleskill responded in the second quarter with stifling defense. The Fighting Tigers quickly tied the game, but a jumper from Rodriguez kept the lead for the Nittany Lions. A 10-1 swing in the final minutes of the half put the Fighting Tigers on top 35-28.
Points in the paint early in the third quarter put the Fighting Tigers into a double-digit lead, which Cobleskill held until the final three minutes. Sophomore
Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) sparked a comeback in the waning minutes with seven points, including the game tying free throw with four seconds remaining.
Abington pushed ahead in the final period, but neither team could hold on for very long, with the lead changing hands seven times. Â Cobleskill tied the contest with only a minute remaining, but Rodriguez sealed the game with a deep jumper to put the game out of reach.
Abington will face off against SUNY Poly tomorrow in the final home game of the season at 12:00 p.m. The Nittany Lions will honor senior
