Nittany Lions Fall to Rutgers Newark, 5-3

FLEMMINGTON, NJ – A first inning single from Matt Meyers (Cheltenham, Pa.) put the Nittany Lions on top early, but Rutgers-Newark rallied to a 5-3 win over Abington on Tuesday evening. Abington is still searching for the first win of the season with a 0-5 record.

Junior catcher Austin Mikula (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Nittany Lions going 2-of-4 with a triple, one run and two RBI's for the game.

The Nittany Lions were first on the board with a sharp RBI single to the shortstop, but Rutgers-Newark tied the game in the second inning.

In the third and fourth inning the Scarlet Raiders added another three runs off of singles to go up 4-1 going into the fifth inning.

With two outs on the board Mikula cut the deficit with his RBI single to center field in the top of the fifth inning.  Later in the seventh he added another run after when the shortstop made an error to bring the game to 4-3.

The Scarlet Raiders added another run in the bottom half of the inning, and kept the Nittany Lions off the board with strong relief pitching.

Abington will now travel down to Orlando Florida for the RussMatt Baseball Invitational and face off against Pitt Greensburg on Sunday morning.
