LANCASTER, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team traveled to the NEAC South leader, Lancaster Bible, but could not upset the host with a 72-60 loss on Wednesday night. Abington falls to 7-8 in the conference, but remains in fourth place in the NEAC South Standings.
Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) fell two points shy of a career high with 25 points on the evening.Â
The Chargers dominated the boards, outrebounding the Nittany Lions 48-31 and earned 38 of their 72 points in the paint.
The first period was hotly contested between both schools with seven lead changes. Hayes spurred the Nittany Lions throughout the first quarter with nine points, but the Chargers held the lead after they finished the period on a 6-0 run.
Abington came within striking distance multiple times in the second period with Hayes draining her shots from behind the arc. However, the Chargers' Courtney Goyak found the basket consistently for her tough points in the paint giving them the halftime advantage.
The Nittany Lions kept up with the Chargers throughout the third period and took the lead at the end of the quarter with an 8-0 run.
In the back and forth fourth quarter, each team answered each other's buckets to take back the lead, but Lancaster Bible pulled away in the final minutes with clutch free-throw shooting.
The Nittany Lions will return home Saturday to face off against SUNY Cobleskill at 1:00 p.m.
