ABINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State Abington women's lacrosse team opened the season with a historic 18-2 win over Centenary College on a blustery
Saturday afternoon. It was the first time in program history that the Nittany Lions opened their home slate with a win, and it was the largest margin of victory in school history.
Fresh off of basketball season, sophomore
Marah Hayes (Churchville, Pa.) dazzled with four goals off of seven shots, and seven draw controls. Senior
Molly Wyman (Abington, Pa.) followed with three goals and a total of eight Nittany Lions found the back of the net.
"I'm proud that we opened our season with a win." Said head coach
Noelle Powell. " I'm happy that we executed everything that we had been working on during our preseason."
Hayes opened up the floodgates in the within the first three minutes of the game with her first goal of the day. The Nittany Lions broke the game wide open with three goals all within a minute from
Melissa Felicetti (Willow Grove, Pa.)
Veronica Baez (Hatboro, Pa.), and Wyman.
The Nittany Lion's didn't let up scoring 10 consecutive goals before the Cyclones could find the back of the net.  Centenary's Abby Volkner broke the scoring streak with two goals in the final minutes before the half.
Fighting through the bitter cold, Abington controlled the second half and stifled the Cyclones attack only allowing four shots the entire half. The Nittany Lions tacked on more goals on their way to the historic win.
Abington looks to continue its momentum when they travel to Keystone College on
Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
