Softball Sweeps Wesley College

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Penn State Abington softball program streaked to its fifth consecutive win with doubleheader sweep over Wesley College on Tuesday afternoon. Abington started the day with a  big 9-1 win in game one and a come from behind 10-8 victory in game two.

Senior Pitcher Emily Wrenn (Hatboro, Pa.) put in a strong performance in game one with only one run scored against her. The Nittany Lions started off the game with a 2-0 advantage in the first inning off a Becca Dougherty (Churchville, Pa.) RBI single. In the sixth inning Abington broke the game wide open off of four consecutive singles and six hits throughout the inning. Freshman Sam Goetz (New Egypt, N.J.) ended the game with a single up the middle to trigger the eight run mercy rule.

The Wolverines got onto the board quickly in the first inning, but the Nittany Lions returned the favor to tie the game with a single from Dougherty.  Abington jumped ahead with four runs in the third inning when Caitlin Brasier (Levittown, Pa.) knocked a three run triple to right field and Amanda McLean (Philadelphia, Pa.) sliced an RBI single. Wesley rallied in the fourth inning with six runs highlighted by a grand slam. In the sixth inning Abington pulled ahead with three runs to close out the game.

Abington will be back in action when they travel to Penn St. Berks for a critical NEAC matchup on Friday afternoon.
